Frequently Asked Questions for our Horse Clients

Please reach us at Scarboroughlandprollc@gmail.com or call/text Erin if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Yes, we have three horses & a pony - Rocs, Cash, Dakota & Zeus. We enjoy trail riding mostly these days & compete for fun in various disciplines.

6-10 inches. Forages like orchardgrass & fescue should not be grazed below 3–4 inches. Leaving adequate leaf area helps the grass regrow quickly, maintain root reserves, and stay healthy long-term.

Rotational grazing works best. Allow pastures to rest and regrow to 8–10 inches before turning horses back in. This keeps plants healthy, prevents overgrazing, and improves forage quality.

We recommend endophyte-free tall fescue, orchardgrass, festolium, perennial ryegrass, and clovers. These cool-season forages perform well in Virginia’s climate and provide quality nutrition for horses.

Additionally Crabgrass is a nutritious, palatable summer forage for horses that thrives when cool-season grasses slow down. It helps maintain weight, extends grazing, and reduces the need for extra feed in hot months.

It depends however a dry lot is an excellent tool that protects pastures during wet weather or drought and prevents horses from damaging forage stands when grass is not actively growing.

Healthy, dense forage is the best defense against weeds. Scarborough LandPro also offers herbicide application services tailored for horse farms, using products safe for equine environments.

Start with a soil test, correct fertility and pH, and choose horse-safe forage varieties. We recommend drill seeding for best results, and we can handle the custom seeding for you. A new pasture must establish strong roots prior to allowing horses to graze.

Yes. Scarborough LandPro offers full-service pasture care programs including soil sampling, fertility applications, weed control, custom seeding, and rotational grazing design to keep horse pastures in top condition.

Soil should be tested every 3 years in most cases.

It all depends on the soil analysis & fertility. As a general approach fertilizing or feeding forages twice a year in the spring & fall supports overall plant health & production.

We always recommend consulting with your veterinarian for specific guidance, but here are our general recommendations:

Weed Control Application -  The products we use are safe for horses to graze once the spray has dried on the plant — usually 1–2 hours after application, unless otherwise noted and discussed.

Fertilizer or Lime Application -  We apply low-dust, granular natural materials evenly across the pasture. These amendments are commonly found in mineral supplements and do not pose a concern when applied properly. Horses may return to grazing once the application is complete.

Seeding Application -  To protect your investment, newly seeded pastures should not be grazed for 6–12 months. This allows time for proper establishment and growth, ensuring a healthy and long-lasting stand.
